If you are pregnant you may be worried about the carpet cleaning chemicals you are exposing your body to. Cleaning the carpets in preparation for a new baby is a common practice, and it shouldn’t be something to fear. In most cases carpet cleaning products are safe. However, it isn’t a bad idea to check with the company you are thinking of hiring. Don’t hesitate to make a call to verify the products they are using are safe.

Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS)

When checking with the cleaning company don’t ask for a list of ingredients. If you are not a chemist, it really won’t tell you anything. Researching all the names will take a lot of time and energy, and will likely leave you unsettled. Instead, it is better to ask to see the Material Safety Data Sheets. These sheets provide a breakdown of all the information the OSHA has compiled for the product. The information included in the sheets includes ingredients, handling, and storage, first-aid measures, exposure, toxicology, and more. For more material, and information safety data sheets go to https://www.osha.gov/sites/default/files/publications/OSHA3514.pdf.

Ask for sheets available

When calling a prospective company, ask for the material safety data sheets for all products. Even if you don’t think you will be interested in them, it’s good to view them. Later, if you change your mind for any reason, you will know the product is safe. Then you will be able to confidently approve the services you desire.

Focus on Section 11

The material safety data sheets can be a bit intimidating. They contain a lot of data that can seem scary. Keep in mind that many of the items listed relate to those that are directly working with the product.  Additionally, they are often referring to situations where the product is in its concentrated form.

The main section that you want to focus on is section 11: Toxicological Information. This section will highlight any of the product’s known problems. If it causes allergic reactions, breathing issues, skin reactions, or eye irritation it will be listed in this section. In addition, many sheets will give a scale that shows the degree of reactivity. Also included will be information on if the product is environmentally friendly. Having this data will help you to feel secure in your decision. You will have a better idea of what companies and products will be best for your situation.

Chemical safety for all cleaning products

You can check the safety of all products you use at home. In the search engine type “MSD sheets for (product name),” into the search engine. All Cleaning products are required to have Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS). The sheets make it much easier to decipher than trying to look up all the ingredients listed.
